The status of tungsten boride superhard material industry is constantly improving


Tungsten boride is widely used in drilling, machinery manufacturing, metal processing, national defense industry, medicine and other fields. Recently, industry websites reported that an international team of scientists has reported on a new superhard material that can be used in drilling, mechanical manufacturing and other fields -- a compound based on tungsten boride. It has been proved that the new tungsten boride has better performance than the hard tungsten carbide cobalt composites and artificial diamond materials which are widely used at present.

Tungsten boride is a black or gray hexagonal-crystalline powder, also of high hardness, often used as wear resistant coatings and semiconductor films for wear resistant parts. At the same time, tungsten boride is also a wave absorber, it can absorb a variety of rays. Due to the difficulty in synthesis, there are few domestic manufacturers producing tungsten boride. At present, Jinzhou Haixin Metal Materials Co., Ltd. has not given up the research and development. The tungsten boride and tungsten erpeng produced by them have been applied in the field and so on, and tungsten Pentaboride is still in further experiments.

As is known to all, hardness and toughness are two mutually restricted parameters in the metal. High hardness and toughness is low, and the material is easy to be brittle and broken. Therefore, finding the balance between the two parameters has been the research object of scientists for many years. Using the USPEX evolutionary algorithm, the scientists predicted a new material, Tungsten pentaboride, that could be synthesized at atmospheric pressure and successfully balance the two most important parameters of the drill -- hardness and fracture toughness. Compared with tungsten carbide bits, tungsten boride bits are 50% higher and 20% lower. The new materials are previously unknown compounds and can be easily obtained under normal conditions. The new material is currently being tested in a large project in Russia and is expected to become a new material for drilling applications.
